Report : Copa De Macau and 8 men pro grappling tournament

Caused by unexpected postponement of DEEP MAYHEM, there were few changes in the 8 men pro grappling tournament fight cards and less crowd for Copa De Macao. However, both event ended up very successful and so special. All of the fighters showed aggression and fought well in the 6 star resort hotel banquet room.

On 8th, Jan, 2011, we'll have a fight festival including Copa De Macau (BJJ Open Tournament), 8 men pro-grappling fight and DEEP MAYHEM MMA, in one day. Its gonna be a fight festival!!

In the mid day of the 8th, there will be 8 - Promen Grappling tournament, the winner receives USD1,500 in cash and entry for DEEP-X (Pro Grappling event) in Japan. We have 4 top grapplers from Japan and South East Asia. All of the competitors are very high skilled!!

The last event of the day would be DEEP MAYHEM, this is a MMA promotion Japan landing first time in China region. 4 current and former champions are coming to fight including "10th degree Leg lock master" Masakazu Imanari. We also have a female MMA with pound, which is the 1st time in HK/Macao and MMA idol "SAORI ISHIOKA 　石岡沙織"　is fighting against Ann from Thailand.

２０１１年１月８日にベネチアンマカオリゾート内で行われる「格闘技の祭典」、コパ　デ　マカオ、８人プロ・グラップリング賞金トーナメント、そしてＤＥＥＰ初の海外興業、DEEP MAYHEM IN MACAOが何と同日に開催されます。

当日は朝から夜まで格闘技漬けになりましょう。

DEEP MAYHEM IN MACAO

Japanese indy promotion DEEP will head to China for the first time in its 10 year existence on Jan. 8, 2011. "Mayhem In Macau" will take place at Macau's Cotai Arena, which can hold anywhere from 7,000 to 15,000 patrons, depending on the seating arrangement. The promotion has launched an English-language website for the show and is offering ticket packages which include ferry fare from Hong Kong to Macau.

Macau is an interesting choice of location for DEEP's first international event, considering some recent goings-on. In early October, Macau-based promotion Fury MMA's "Armageddon" event was canceled at the 11th hour, leaving fighters such as Carina Damm and Eiji Ishikawa stranded as local authorities investigated embezzlement claims. Nonetheless, many believe China to be ripe for MMA invasion, and Chinese promotions such as Legend FC and Art of War have found modest success on the mainland in the past few years.

The only fight announced thus far features DEEP megaton champion Yusuke Kawaguchi defending his title for the first time in over a year against Kazuhisa Tazawa. Also announced as participants: welterweight champ Yuya Shirai, former middleweight ace Ryuta Sakurai, JEWELS veteran Saori Ishioka,decorated BJJ player Marcos "Marquinho" Souza (in his MMA debut), "TUF" alum Andy Wang, plus Luiz Andrade, Alex Niu, Yasuki Kitazaki, Yoann Gouaida and Ann Tipsuta Wongkhamma.

The most important day of KLN BJJ's 5 years history is now over!!

On 8th of May, we had Prof. Ikuta's seminar, Desafio (One match BJJ competition) and KLN BJJ's 5 years Birthday Party!! It was a memorable day, we had bunch of fun and as usual, lots funny stories after drinking our signature drink, Tequila!!!!

I must say thank to Prof. Ikuta and Taiwan BJJ guys for coming from overseas to have fun with us!! I became so emotional after seeing KLN BJJ's 5th year Birth day party, you guys are really crazy and awesome. Lets train, play and drink together and celebrate our 10th year anniversary.

Oh, another special thanks to "The punisher bros" they came all the way from hell to entertain us.

Copa KLN 2 has successfully ended on last Sunday. I think we did more than excellent job with what we have in our hand.

Also all the KLN warriors showed tuff heart during the matches. Most of you are training less than few month and most of other fighters have longer experiences than you. Amount of training really lead you to improvements, so if you are motivated from the competition, lets train harder for the next one!!

All the volunteers who did magnificent help, really x 2 thanks! Especially guys helped out to do referee, we are so appreciated of your support (The most stressful job in BJJ)!! Also, thanks to Hoin (AKA lover boy) for organising and running the event.

The official result is to be announced on coming Wed.

There will be 1st Asian BJJ open by CBJJE (Used be CBJJO) in Japan, November.
CBJJE is mainly organised by Nova Uniao and its the 2nd biggest BJJ federation in the world.

The last week of September 2009 was really an excellent 7 days for KLN BJJ.

We had Ken from Angra Tokyo, Prof. Ikuta from Trust Jiujitsu and Makoto Ogasawara from Taiwan BJJ! Thank you very much for teaching us and your friendship.

We are a bit confused at the moment coz we were taught too many techniques and concepts in such a short period! KLN guys, I have taken movies and notes, so lets train together and make sure to try all of the techniques. We have enough homework to fulfill rest of the year!!

Also, Macau trip with about 20 members were so much fun!!! (but really tired...). Reminded a high school activity, haha!! Thanks Gus for organising AOW event and providing special arrangement for us!

Oh, remember. We'll have "Rodo" from this week!

On 26th, a big group (18 members) from KLN BJJ went to Macau to watch AOW14, cheering our friends Vaughn and Andy from Taiwan BJJ.It was an exciting event with lots of fun! Moreover, we have met the "legend" Royce Gracie, Ralph Gracie, Wndarei Silva and Bass Rutten. Royce and Ralph were especially nice guys and had nice talking in the party afterwards. BJJFJ informed us that there will be 1st Tokyo International Brazilian Jiujitsu Open in coming November. This competition does not require IBJJF/BJJFJ ID card, so it will be a good opportunity to experience one of the biggest BJJ competition in Asia Region.

Mauricio started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the age of 12 at the suggestion of his brother and friends. He comes from the Gracie Barra school. Mauricio's first instructor was Jean Jacques Machado and he has trained from the blue belt to this day with Carlos Gracie Jr. after Jean Jacques moved to the US. Mauricio has achieved many titles in all of the major tournaments in Brazil and the US. He was promoted to black belt at the age of 21 by his professor Carlos Gracie Jr. and has been teaching ever since. Mr. Lee (Brown belt of Brasa Brasil, under Leo Viera) is one of the founder of BJJKA and extreamely high skilled brown belt from Korea.
He is also a good friend of us and again welcomed us with the best hospitality and great vibes. He has been training in Brazil, Japan and many other countries and his attitude towards Jiu jits is very respectable. He won the world championship in purple belt in Brasil in 2006.
We really respect his BJJ skills and personality, he is a soulful man. We have been visiting him since 2005 and learning new stuff everytime. If you have a chance to visit Seoul Korea, I highly reccomend you to visit and train with him. He has nicely updated Brazil styles and techniques. (His students are also very good)

Proffesor Ikuta Makoto Seminar and Class: Kowloon BJJ, 2-3 November

I think I speak for all participants when I say that it was really great having the opportunity to train with and learn from Prof. Ikuta Makato. His approach to teaching was wonderful and very modern, by making students think and question as to "why" you do a move in a certain way and the fundamental principals behind each step and position to the finest detail. And that is what comes to mind when I think of Prof. Ikuta’s BJJ game: technique refined and perfected to the finest detail.

As Prof. Ikuta made very clear in his seminar, understanding the importance of the principles behind each movement with respect to proper positioning, space and efficiency of movement without power is key to developing great technique, and just as important as the physical application of the move. As he made clear in his lecture, if we can understand the principles behind the movements, then we can learn to make successful adjustments when needed in real-time whilst sparring. In addition, he also encouraged us in the future to consider ways in which we can begin to create our own jiu-jitsu techniques based on these fundamental concepts of positioning, space and movement. On the second full day of his visit, we had the honor of Prof. Ikuta heading one of our regular weekly classes. During this session, he taught us some great tumbling warm-up movements, as well as an armbar and triangle drill using only hips with no hands. Once again, during the class he continually emphasized the importance of performing the movements without the utilization of power to improve technique and efficiency of application. Since his leaving, we have already begun to integrate these movements, drills and concepts into our regular classes.And finally, as those who would be meeting him for the first time quickly discovered, Prof. Ikuta is truly one of the nicest and most generous guys in the BJJ community that one will ever meet. So, all of us at Kowloon BJJ need to give a big thanks to Kei, Taki, Kubo and others who helped develop this great contact with Prof. Ikuta of Trust Jiu-jitsu. And I think I speak for all of us here in Hong Kong when I say that we can’t wait for our next opportunity to visit and train with him and his team in the near future.

Prof. Christiano Carvalho was in Hong Kong for his business trip this week and kindly visited us for 2 nights!! Excellent magic moves with clear explanations, we had a lot to learn. Thank you very much Professor!!

He is now living in Singapore and teaching at KREATION JIUJITSU. They are very active and strong BJJ academy in South East Asia. A holiday BJJ Camp with other two black belts in an island of Malaysia is planned in end of this month.

Prof. Ikuta and a big team from Trust BJJ visited KLN BJJ from 1st to 4th of November 2008. Ikuta san's 2 days class was simply amazing with lots of attendance and smiles.

His concept of BJJ is "tightness" and "relax". Very unique approach but he actually proves that it really works against bigger guys too!!

Q: Tell us a little about yourself, Name and age?
A: Leonardo Santos, 27 years old.

Q: How long have you been doing Bjj?
A: I’ve been doing Bjj for 20 years, since I was 7 years old, but I only took it seriously at the age of 13, because before that it was only a way for me to exercise and burn off energy.

Q: Where did you begin to learn Bjj and who was/is your teacher?
A: I began training at “Mello Tenis Clube”, a club in “Vila da Pena” in Rio de Janeiro with Prof. Wendell Alexander, which later turned into Nova União along with Prof. Pederneiras. In my opinion, I’ve trained with the two greatest teachers in the world, André Pederneiras and Wendell Alexander.

Q: Which were the most significant moments in your career?
A: I think it was my first “Mundial”, because I was only 15 and won in the adult category, making me the youngest world champion. Another very important moment for me was when they held an event for the world’s top sixteen black belts in the “leve” category, which I won without losing any points and which would see me ranked as number 1 in the “leve” category. That was something that I had always dreamt of and with hard work I achieved it!

Q: For you, what differs Bjj from other martial arts and what made you choose Bjj over other martial arts?
A: I think that the efficiency of jiu-jitsu in hand-to-hand combat makes a huge difference and it gives you tremendous confidence, because, as we all know jiu-jitsu was created for a weaker person to defeat a stronger one and it is possible with jiu-jitsu!
I started training because my brother Wagnney Fabiano was already into BJJ. When I went to see him fight, I found it magnificent, and I began training from that moment on…

Q: In you opinion, which technique should a Bjj practitioner develop more (flexibility, strength, pure technique or others)?
A: I think that you have to have all these options if you want to be a professional athlete… But most importantly, having a good team and a good master is the most important!

Q: Apart from Jiu-jitsu, do you do other sports (surf, yoga, soccer, etc.)? And which do you think complements Jiu-jitsu the best?
A: I play soccer, and I’ve tried surfing, but if you want to complement your jiu-jitsu, I think Judo and Wrestling helps a jiu-jitsu fighter a lot. I’ve tried it and from my personal experience it made my game a lot better.

Q: What is your favourite technique to submit your opponents on the mat?
A: I train not to lose positions, therefore, I believe that my favourite technique will be the one I see at a given moment and one that my opponent gives me.

Q: What are your thoughts on the general association of Bjj with Vale Tudo (MMA)? Positive or negative?
A: On the one hand, it is negative because people think jiu-jitsu means vale tudo, hence, for those who don’t like vale tudo, it gives them a bad impression. Many think jiu-jitsu is violent due to vale tudo.

Q: Which are, in your opinion, the three countries besides Brazil, with the most developed Bjj?
A: From what I’ve seen through seminars and championships, I think the USA, Japan, Canada or France!

Q: Have you got any plans to develop Bjj beyond borders? Nova União schools, etc.?
A: Look, before I had thought not, but now I’m thinking of leaving Brazil to promote jiu-jitsu and create my own team. What is missing at the moment is a good proposition, I have had some invitations to leave Brazil, but nothing has convinced me yet. Besides the invitation, I want to feel that the person inviting me really wants to do a good job and make jiu-jitsu as well as the team grow.

Q: How did the idea of founding Nova União start?
A: It started when Wendell’s team trained with another team, because the two were small in numbers, so we decided to group together for a championship, in which we ranked second. Because everything went well, we had to come up with a name and we went with “Nova União” because it was the union of two small teams which would fight against bigger and more experienced teams.

Q: Tell us a little bit about your friend and a black belt, Daniel Charles, who is currently teaching the gentle art in China (Macau e Hong Kong)?
A: He’s an excellent athlete, and from what I can see, he is really taking the job seriously and making the name of the team grow. I wish him luck and I’m sure that with seriousness and responsibility, soon his work will be well known and recognized by everyone!

Q: Would you like to come visit us in Macau and Hong Kong one day?
A: For sure, it would be a great pleasure. Well, for me it’s always good to know a new country and its customs, and surely to teach and to pass on a little bit of my experience. Just to be able to give back to the sport that has given so much to me is priceless, so of course, if one day I get an invitation, it will be well received.
